How Traveling Affects Our Skin

Plane Air

Before your vacation even begins your skin is taking a huge hit just from being on the plane. Say good-bye to your bright skin once fastened in your seat! The plane’s pressurized air is going to suck all that moisture from that pretty little face of yours!  And, the impact can leave your skin looking dull and completely dehydrated. Plus, cabin pressure can give you puffy eyes, chapped lips, and even oily skin. I know it sucks! You haven’t even had your vacation yet.

Climate Change

No matter where you are going, more than likely the weather won’t be the same wherever you are at the moment. Sudden weather changes can impact your skin causing breakouts or dry patches to occur. And that’s not all. These climate changes can also cause old or even new skin conditions to pop-up unexpectedly!

Changes In Water Quality

Wherever you are going, I guarantee the water quality will not the be same that comes out of your faucet. Your face will be exposed to changes in water quality such as hard or chlorinated water. Both unwarranted factors can cause dryness, redness, and skin irritation. Don’t get me started on your hair!

Change In Routine And Diet

We are on vacation! So, you have a schedule jam packed either with lounging at the beach, visiting museums, or doing whatever else flips your fancy. Let’s be honest, during vacation we typically neglect our skin care routine as we would back home. Which can result in breakouts, dullness, or even clogged pores. Yikes!

We also tend to eat a diet of that consist of more fatty foods and drink a tad bit more alcohol. All these foods and cocktails can lead to oily skin and pretty sure that is not the J.Lo glow you are going for.

So without further ado, keep reading for how to take care of your skin while traveling with this easy guide. Follow these 11- tips and you will know how to look good while traveling!

Tips On How To Take Care Of Your Skin While Traveling

1| Keep up with your cleansing routine as much as possible

So you arrived and hopefully are not too jet-lagged to begin your festivities. First thing is first, do not stray away from your cleansing routine. If you don’t already have one or looking up to change things up a bit, check out my post on How To Follow The Korean Skincare Routine Day And Night.

When traveling we already stray from our everyday routine, right? For starters, there is no work, yay! So you may roll out of bed and abandon your skincare routine on day one. Do not throw these words of wisdom through the window, wash your face twice daily on vacation! Don’t invite more stress on your skin by straying away from yet another routine.

2| Don’t forget to apply moisturizer

Do you want to know the secret to how to look good while traveling? Invest in a good quality moisturizer that will provide the maximum benefits for your skin type. A properly hydrated face is key to keeping your skin healthy and avoiding those pesky breakouts during your travels.

One of my absolute favorites that I keep in my carry-on and medicine cabinet is The True Cream- Aqua Bomb by Belif. It is light; however, it provides supreme moisture and keeps my face looking soft and hydrated. So to keep that skin looking sexy head on over to Amazon and get yours!

3| Keep yourself hydrated with H2O

I get it, you’re on vacation and enjoying sunset views, dining at a Michelin restaurant, or even looking at Positano afar from a boat. You want to enjoy those moments with a glass of wine or a fancy cocktail, but all that alcohol will dry your skin out.  Rumor has it you need to consume at least 16-ounces of water per 6-ounces of liquor and 12-ounces of beer.

When your body becomes dehydrated some of the effects can be…ACNE! The last thing you want in your photos is your face covered with pimples. Your skin is the largest organ in your body. Being dehydrated from alcohol can strip away all those yummy nutrients and vitamins our body desperately needs to look fresh. So stay hydrated peeps. A great way how to keep your skin clear while traveling is to drink plenty of water. And when you thought you drank enough, drink more!

P.S. Don’t forget that wherever you are going check out if the water quality is safe for consumption!

4| Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate

Me looking surprised while spraying a facial essence.

While you are out walking cobblestone streets or lounging on a beach, keep some facial essence handy in your bag. Luckily, they come in travel-size bottles that make them so easy to tote around. Spray on a few spritzes every couple of hours to ensure your skin stays properly hydrated. My absolute die-hard favorite is Mario Badescu’s Spritz Mist. There are a variety of delicious scents that you can choose from for a quick pick-me-up.

Here is an additional tip for you. Facial essence isn’t only for traveling. I like to give myself a few spritzes every couple of hours throughout the day. It is a great way to get a quick refresher while adding moisture to your skin.

5| Have a spa day in your room for cheap by applying a sheet mask

Okay, I am obsessed with these overly serum saturated fabrics for my face. Sheet masks are pure heaven in providing maximum hydration! I adore these suckers even more so when traveling. These sheet masks are power-packed with all the vitamins and nutrients your skin loses due to the effects of traveling. Apply one at least a few times while you are on vacation. Since they come in a variety of skincare concerns, I typically select ones that target hydration or brightening when I travel. My absolute favorite sheet masks are from Andalou. They are so darn juicy and leave my skin feeling totally hydrated and looking plump!

6| Apply moisturizer again

I am going to say it again MOISTURIZE. Remember, your skin took a major beating alone from that yucky airplane. The plane environment acts as a moisture-sucking vacuum, depleting your skin of all its hydration. Between the mixture of dry cabin air and flying at a high altitude keep that skin looking sexy by slapping on some additional moisturizer. My holy grail of moisturizers is from Belif. This moisturizer just makes my skin feel so sexy and healthy! If you wanna know how to take care of your skin while traveling, my top tip is to moisturize and keep your skin supple!

7| Don’t Neglect Getting Plenty Of Sleep

Avoid additional issues that may impact your skin by getting all your beauty sleep. It may be difficult initially adjusting to a new time zone, but do try your best. During my long flights, I like to take some sort of sleeping pill so I can get a little rest on the plane before arriving. Good Day is a yummy chocolate-flavored melatonin sleeping aid that works pretty darn quickly in knocking you out. You will sleep like a princess or prince with this melatonin.

8| Do not, I repeat do not touch your face

Me touching my face to show how to tAKE CARE OF YOUR SKIN WHILE TRAVELING is avoiding touching your face

Are you wanting breakouts? I don’t think so. Another great tip on how to keep your skin clear on vacation is to keep your hands off your face! Avoid it like it is a plague always. But, ESPECIALLY while you’re traveling! Just think where have your hands been. They have touched money, doors, tables, chairs, and just about everything. Your hands have picked up all those germs and bacteria so don’t transfer all that to your face.

9| Apply sunscreen to your face every day (not just traveling either)

Protect your skin from the damaging effects of the sun, indoor lighting, computer, and cell phone screens by applying this sunscreen. The benefits of sunscreen application are the prevention of skin discoloration, skin cancer, wrinkles, and blotchiness. An added bonus of sunscreen is it helps maintain a youthful appearance. Heck yeah, I want some of that.  I always apply sunscreen after make-up application and setting spray. A sunscreen I cannot live without is from Supergoop. It is lightweight and does the job of protecting my skin without feeling slimy or heavy.

10| Moisturize under those eyes

Me posing with saying my right eye down to stress moisturizing under your eye

We are not going to neglect our eyes. Don’t forget to keep those under eyes moisturized.  It can help deter puffiness and fine lines. Eye cream is also great for brightening the eyes. What a great way to fake being refreshed after a long flight.

11| Wearing less is better!

Try to avoid wearing heavy make-up while traveling. Okay, I get you may want to do a glamorous face one night for dinner. Do it girl!  We all want to look good on vacation, I know. But, don’t pack your face with make-up daily, try and keep it light. That beautiful face of yours has gone under so much stress. Be good to your face and let it breathe.

Here are some additional skincare tips for flying:

  • I am pretty sure I have exhausted this enough. MOISTURIZE during your flight. APPLY, APPLY, APPLY!
  • Have a clean face before boarding the plane. Leave the make-up in your travel bag. There is no need to have a full face of makeup for a long flight. Your skin will have to fight so many other factors being on that plane. At least let your face breathe.
  • Drink plenty of water. Hydrate yourself with lots of H2O.
  • Spray facial essence every waking hour!
  • Apply moisturizer AGAIN! You knew I was going to throw that in the mix one more time! It’s a simple solution to how to keep your skin clear while traveling!
  • Apply a sheet mask mid-flight for an extra boost of hydration.
  • Catch up on some Zzzz’s. Go ahead and get a head start on some sleep before arriving.
